Five East High School parents meet in the East parking lot in 2003 to share their concerns about the blighted condition of the athletic fields, the campus and the historic architectural context that surrounds the school. They scheduled a meeting to discuss possible solutions and 50 people from across the city attended. Now, this group has grown to 175 volunteers. Thanks to them, Project Angel Pride has a solid record of accomplishments.

Foremost, Project Angel Pride is responsible for coordinating the two major stakeholders: Denver Public Schools' Department of Facilities Management and the City of Denver's Departments of Parks and Recreation and Public Works:

  • Trimmed the 75 vulnerable and venerable crabapples trees on the Esplanade in 2003
  • Created a 30-year inter-agency agreement between DPS and the city to build tennis courts for the use of East's tennis teams in City Park
  • A continuing collaboration with Parks and Recreation and Public Works to upgrade the Esplanade, including irrigation, drainage, new curb and gutter alignment, paving, lighting and landscaping
  • Partnered with DPS to enhance the G. O. bond funded all purpose athletic field on the west side of the Esplanade and to enhance the state-of-the-art baseball/softball/soccer fields on the northeast corner of the EHS campus
  • Funded bleachers for both the athletic field and baseball field
  • Discussions between Denver Water and DPS to acquire non-potable water to irrigate the East High campus
  • Upgraded the school's historic masonry facade through the DPS General Obligation Bond Program
  • Funded the $14,000 cost of a restoration study to assess rehabilitation needs and costs for the Sullivan Memorial Gateway
  • Funded a capital needs assessment study comparing the condition of the East High campus to other U.S. high schools
